weekending, Tova, and KCWC

We had a perfect spring weekend (although today I am wondering where Spring went?).  Family was in town house-hunting, as in, moving here!  They have two boys, the youngest is five like Jack.  Here are all four boys walking to the T-Ball fields.

It just happened to be the big Jamboree fundraiser event at the fields this Saturday, so the boys had a blast running around the festival together.  After my volunteer hour, I spent the game like so:

Don't you just love it when a quilt is being used? And so much more comfortable than bleachers.  Plus I was in the shade of the dugout overhang; Saturday was HOT. Here's a close up of my little slugger:

My birthday was Sunday and I got some leisurely time along in my sewing room.  Plenty of family fun, too, but with little ones time alone is a treat!

I finished my Wiksten Tova for the Sew-Along with verykerryberry. I did not hem the bottom, as I am considering making it more of a top than a tunic, but can't decide.  Why does the wind always pick up when I step outside with a camera?

I used a cotton lawn print from the Lisette collection at JoAnn's.  About a quarter of the cost of Liberty lawn, I figured my first go ought not to be with something so dear.  I sound like my grandmother, she always called expensive things dear.  Do other people even use that word that way?

The only major divergence from the pattern is that I did a bias bound neckline instead of the band collar.  Not really sure why, it just seemed like a good idea.

I also got a head start on cutting out squares for the quilt coming up in the Zakka Style Sew Along.  I am excited to make two quilts for two friends expecting baby girls!

Finally, I also readied some fabrics and patterns for Kids Clothes Week Challenge Spring 2012! The challenge is to sew clothes for your kids for an hour each day all week.  I toyed with not participating, but come on, who was I kidding!

My first completion is a pair of Board Shorts from Patterns by Figgy.  I love the construction of these, but it was unfamiliar to me, so the first pair kept me up a little later than expected.  I have to finish Jack's tonight, but at least with the cold, blustery day we are having, no one needs them immediately!

I made them using a Kokka Trefle fabric in a nice, sturdy cotton canvas.  I bought the fabric months ago with this project in mind.

I love the details on these shorts, they are just tough to see with the dark thread and dark print.

The side pockets were especially cool to make.  I love a pattern that uses a lot of details.  Sometimes it can seem like extra work, but the results always make you so glad you put in the time.

I'll be back tomorrow, hopefully with a second pair of board shorts and some pants.  We'll see!  Hope your week is off to a good start!

  6. How was the sizing on the pattern? I've been dying to make one, but I'm afraid it won't fit me.
