Christmas Quilt

Since I am not making many handmade gifts this year, I decided to make a Christmas quilt for my parents.  My mom takes decorating for Christmas to the ninth degree and seeing my Nicey Jane Colorbricks out on her sofa at her Annual Ornament Exchange Luncheon last year made me realize how nice a holiday quilt would look there.

The colors in Kate Spain's Joy line are perfect for my parents' home, and I like that it is not too cutesy.

I bought one Jelly Roll and one Charm Pack and decided to just frame the charm squares with the 2.5" strips.  I cut each jelly roll into two 5" pieces and two 9" pieces and then had fun matching up squares and borders.

I originally cut out enough for 30 blocks, but then realized that the 5x6 setup was a little small so I cut more.  Last night I was kind of thinking a square from 36 blocks.

Now this morning I realized that I have 6 charm squares left and since some of the jelly roll strips have a duplicate, I can weasel 6 more borders out of them.   I thought about sashing, but now I am hoping it will be a nice lap quilt without dealing with sashing.

Hopefully I can get the top together today!  Any ideas on how to quilt this one would be appreciated.  I am thinking straight lines, but I am itching to do some free motion quilting.  I have one week to deliver it at the Ornament Exchange!

Also, I'll be closing the Perfect Padfolio Pattern Giveaway tonight and announcing a winner tomorrow, so go enter if you haven't yet!

  1. This is looking really gorgeous, and I bet it will end up being a family heirloom! I thought of straight lines for the quilting, too. Maureen Cracknell has a QAYG tutorial which I used to quilt log cabin blocks in straight lines. When I put them together I turned half the blocks so that everything alternated, vertical lines in one, horizontal lines in the next. I haven't gotten the back on yet, but I loved the ease of quilting (because I was quilting each square independently).

  2. Try backing it with fleece or minky....flannel would work too. Make it nice and cozy. All over quilt it. Lovely!

  3. Beautiful! Joy is such a happy line and your quilt really shows it off.

  4. It's so cheery and festive! Your Mum is a lucky lady. Maybe you could do mainly straight lines, but leave a few squares with no quilting, and then you could do some free motion just in those squares - maybe holly leaves or stars or something?
Whatever you decide it will be beautiful!
