Circle 7 Ideas

When Jennifer asked if I wanted to be part of a traveling quilt bee with an amazing group of people I was so honored and completely excited.  I had been watching from the sidelines of these two bees with a bit of envy!  I just can't wait for our own bee, Circle 7, to get started!  Thank goodness, everyone agreed that we can post updates as we work on each other's quilts, or the suspense might have done me in.

After the initial excitement wore of it took me no time to think of a theme.  Somewhere Over the Rainbow.  That song and movie have everything I love in them - rainbows, birds, clouds, skies, poppies, emeralds, stars, hearts, etc.  I have been Dorothy for Halloween a ton of times, too.  This is me with my Cowardly Lion, Jack, on his first Halloween.  Too bad you can't see my Ruby Red Slippers!

A quick search on Flickr showed me that I was not the first person to think of a similarly themed quilt!  However most of the quilts used photorealistic fabric (so not my style) with characters from the movie and very literal interpretations, and I am envisioning something a little more subtle.

So maybe flying geese instead of bluebirds, or a heart on a gray background instead of an actual tin man, I think there are lots of ways to go with this.  I can't wait to see the quilt start to come together!

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star

And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.
