There's a Foot for That

I am blessed to have two very creative mothers-in-law.  My own mother would not call herself creative because she does not sew, knit or paint, but she has the most beautiful house and garden.  She is also a pro at gracious entertaining and every occasion at her home is a success, from lunch with the grandkids to a fancy Christmas dinner for 25 people.  So, I think she is very creative.  Back to my mothers-in-law, my sewing mother-in-law brought me a lovely package yesterday in advance on my birthday.

My mother-in-law and I are sewing geeks.  I don't think she would be offended by that, I mean it in the best possible way.  She found the most amazing thing at the Bernina store:  Bernina Feetures: A Guide to Presser Feet, Accessories, and Attachments.

She actually bought me volumes 1 and 2, and I have been busy poring over them to absorb all of their wonderfulness.  If you don't know about Berninas, just know that they have a specific foot for any sewing task.  I'm not intimately familiar with many other brands, but I believe they are fairly famous for presser feet (besides being awesome machines). These feet can be expensive but once you see one demonstrated, you just have to have it!  This is how I acquired piping, cording and invisible zipper feet. They take complicated tasks and make them neat, precise and easy.  Anything from pleating to making cording to automatic buttonholes.

As you can see in the photo above, it outlines how to set stitch length and width to make the best possible stitch for each situation.

It also shows how to do many tricky sewing things, like the lapped zipper shown above, with step by step instructions.

So, call me a geek, but much of my weekend is going to be spent studying up.  I can't believe how much I didn't know. I am happy to have this reference guide at the ready!

Have a great weekend! -Courtney
